POETRY

In poetry, i was already set. During part one, i began a painting inspired by Leonard Cohen's poem 'Lambchops' but sadly never finsihed it. I decided that i would take my time in poetry to finish this painting, however, i still have not finished the painting- it seems like the more i paint the more there is to paint, however, i have added to what i did last term and i decided that i would still submit this for poetry because i feel such a deep connection to this painting (for some unknown reason).

"My first step? Finding a poem. I didn't realize there was a UAL library until this day so me and a couple of classmates took the long expedition to the main building to look for poetry books in the library. On finding the poem section, i didn't recognize any particular poetry books so i decided to choose a book by Leonard Cohen as i believe his music alone to be poetry so i figured it was a safe bet. After flicking through the book a few times, i landed on a poem that took my interest, called 'Lambchops' and decided to make a simple storyboard of a visualization of this poem in my sketchbook. This is where i encountered my first major mistake, that mistake being that i identified lamb chops, the namesake of the poem, as a part of a pig. I did not realise this mistake until i had already began painting so i had to adapt the poem around it in the end.

After making my storyboard and deciding i was happy with it, i considered different choices for execution of this poem. I decided, despite having no prior painting experience other than out painting day a week earlier in fine art, that i was going to paint this poem, large-scale. This was my second major mistake as i don't really know how to paint and i completely underestimated the time it takes to create a massive painting, a task that i now very much respect as it was long and labor intensive.

I was origionally going to paint on pieces of paper stuck together to make one long piece of paper, however, i didn't want my painting to be flimsy and delicate and, having seen other painters paint on wood in my old college, i decided that i would paint on wood too. I took myself down to the school skip and found a long, sort of clean, piece of wood to paint on and lugged it into our classroom. Now that i had my material, i began to plot out my painting. I did this as if i was plotting out a tonal drawing, i began with the general shapes, referring back to my plan, and then once i had plotted in those shapes i went to work adding the detail. I had to remind myself a few times not to shade in my drawings as they were going to get covered up. I used google images for reference and my phone is filled with images of dead rabbits and people biting each other." -AN EXERPT FROM MY WORKFLOW WHEN I BEGAN THIS PAINTING.
