MY BOX

Looking at Joseph Cornell's work and considering the two projects 'scale and illusion' and 'leftovers', we were encouraged to create a sculptural piece out of found items and think about its lighting and using the space within it. For my box, i used an old granola packet that had a perfect circular opening on one of its faces (hence why i chose it- it looks like a little window). As i am pretty much a hoarder of lost and found objects, i found it very easy to find things to put in my box-scape and instead had to stop myself from over filling it- as someone who doesn't have the best self control i found this part of this project quite challenging as i had to really think about the aesthetics of the objects i was using.

I chose to make my box's insides feel like an overgrown woodland, inspired by the observations i made out of the train windows in the pre-leftover trip we were set the day before. I wanted to play into both leftovers and scale and illusion as i was unsure at this point which i was going to chose. Using watered down acrylic paint and string, i created a rain-like atmosphere inside the box (pouring and escaping out with the string and paint drips). I then placed my objects inside- a cutout from a fashion magazine, a blue bangle, and my foliage and snow. For my foliage i used mugwort, a herb i carry on me to smoke and make tea with that helps with sleep and relaxation- i felt like the scent of the herb would pull in a sense that is often forgotten in art, and for my snow i used dry shampoo powder (which is essentially just baby powder that smells like grapefruit a bit). I decided at the beginning i wanted my box suspended so i had taped it onto the wall and draped a necklace through it, falling out the bottom corner almost.

Although i was getting some light through the little window on the right, the box was looking too dark so i added a stain glass window in the opposite side using an evil eye pendant i carry about with me day to day. I love religious imagery and the addition of the evil eye made the box feel like much more of a space than it had before- more atmospheric.
